A last look at BF Vs CoD

It’s a well-known fact that if you want a good first-person shooter, you get a game from either the Call of Duty franchise, or the Battlefield franchise. It’s also a fact that there are wildly varying opinions on which games are better, you have the hardcore CoD fans on one side, and the hardcore Battlefield fans on the other. I’ve played many games from both franchises and have found out that there is no clear-cut answer on which games are better.

With Call of Duty games, you have great online connection, decent graphics, and the fun of setting up custom and private servers with friends. However, voice chatting capabilities are mainly used for “trolling”, servers are filled to the brim with hackers, bullet and weapon physics aren’t realistic at all, and there are no drivable vehicles.

On the other hand, Battlefield has amazing graphics, lifelike physics, and drivable vehicles, to name a few wonderful benefits in the game. Unfortunately, online play is notorious for being very glitchy, and you have to pay extra for custom server capabilities. That being said, there aren’t many trolls or hackers on Battlefield games, and, brace yourself for this, but voice chat is actually used to HELP people! Imagine that!

These are just a few main points, but overall, with many years of gaming experience between the two franchises, I can safely say that Battlefield makes an overall better game. But don’t just take my word for it, buy, rent, or borrow a copy of CoD MW3 and a copy of BF3 and experience the truth!

Battlefield 3 DLC: Got 3200 MP Spare?

Have you recently purchase Battlefield 3? Perhaps you've had it for a while but have struggled to level up online?

EA has the solution for players who want all the upgrades and unlocks for all of the game's classes in one handy piece of downloadable content.

The down side? It costs a mighty sum of 3200 Microsoft Points, which is around £30 of your real money.

As quoted from the Xbox Live Marketplace listing:
Get all weapons and gadgets unique to all four classes, all upgrades for both air and ground vehicles, and all co-op weapons in the ultimate shortcut bundle! This massive pack immediately unlocks all 119 weapons, gadgets, and vehicle upgrades..
For between 500 and 2000 points you can unlock specific classes, in case you didn't want to unlock them all.

As slow as I level up online I doubt I'd ever be tempted to spend such a large amount of money on unlocking everything. Gaming Unity readers, are any of you tempted? Perhaps you've already bought it?

Let's see those comments y'all.

Battlefield's Battlelog

So, Battlefield 3 has now been out for over a week and we think that the majority of teething problems seem to have been ironed out, most of these relating to PC servers and a rather strange decision to upgrade the European XBL servers on release day. So, how are all of you lucky enough to already have a copy finding it?

The inclusion of the 'Battlelog' is something that I personally like - at first I did not see much point in it, which is how JurassicJunkie currently feels after finally playing online a whole week after getting the game! I like this feature, it helps me know what to concentrate on - killing bad guys. You might argue that in a game like Battlefield I should have expected it, but let's just say Battlelog points out how bad I am at it as you can see from my somewhat questionable stats above.

I like the ability to compare my stats with people who aren't playing on the same system as me; being a PS3 gamer I rarely get to play against Mr. Junkie so I find it interesting to see how my abilities compare to him. The 'platoon' feature is also quite cool, although given the minimal number of people I keep on my friends list I have not yet had the chance to fully explore how the platoon stats work. Regardless, I have set up the platoon 'GamingUnity' which just has myself in at the moment. Please feel free to request to join this platoon if you've signed up for Battlelog. If you do join though, be aware that other people in the platoon will be able to see your Origin Tag and even friends, so bare this in mind if you'd rather be all secretive and mysterious. See the Platoon and it's shocking logo here. The logo will be updated soon - I personally am as good with any form of art as I am accurate with a weapon.

So, do you think that the Battlelog is a nice addition, or a waste of time?

See you on the battlefield, Hooah!

Free Battlefield 3 In-Game Dog Tags [updated]

Just a quick note to let you know that those of you with Battlefield 3 can go and watch a trailer for the feature length film 'Act of Valour' to get access to some in-game dog tags. The film is inspired by real US Military missions and apparently staring real Marines! Check it out here

It's a shame that they aren't real dog tags, like the ones given out at their launch events but they still look pretty cool! I think the Flaming Skull one will go well with my blood-splattered N7 tag.

(PS sorry about the low quality image - we're both at work and don't have access to any decent graphics applications!)

Update: Unfortunately the PS3 codes being given don't seem to be working, shame really!

You’re not getting a copy of Battlefield 1943.

A few weeks ago it looked like the xbox version of Battlefield 3 was the best one to purchase out of the two consoles due to is “high rez texture pack”, since then we have found out both consoles will be getting this but then EA said PS3 owners would get a free copy of Battlefield 1943 on the Battlefield 3 disc. Now that’s a sweet deal and has made a lot of users buy for the PS3 instead.

But this was a lie.

When you get your copy of Battlefield 3 for the PlayStation 3 you will notice there is nothing to do with Battlefield 1943 at all, it’s not there. EA have said to make up for it they have pushed forward the DLC date a week early for PS3 users. This is also known as you can give your money to EA a week early, so they have ripped-off users out of a free game.

Has anyone picked it up on PS3 just because of this free game, let us know in the comments

Xbox 360 to get High resolution texture pack

We all know that PS3 do have the edge on the Xbox 360 when it comes down to storing data on to a game disc thanks to its blu-ray technology. This means that some times Xbox 360 users are given a game over 2 or more discs. Well the same goes from Battlefield 3. PS3 users will get everything all crammed in to one blu-ray but the Xbox users will get 2 discs, one for offline and one for online.

Its not much of a problem, but it is a little pain, but that pain can be ignored now that DICE have revealed that Xbox users will get a High resolution texture built in to the game that you can install to improve your graphics even more.

EDIT: DICE have now said PS3 will also support this

EA and Battlefield are angry

EA and the team behind Battlefield have hit boiling point this week. First of all it was a lot of user moaning they didn’t want Operation Metro as the free beta map, and an understandably frustrated rep from BF3 unloaded on the forum telling users to grow up and the beta is a privilege, not a right.

Now they have found that some users are now hosting hacked servers to play BF3 beta, so they have jumped back on the forums to ask user to remain on the official server but also said if you do go on an unofficial server your account may be banned by EA. Then to really drive it home they added another comment saying “If your account gets banned it does mean any EA game you have on your account would also be unavailable”

Now I can understand them being upset about this but the problem is the unofficial servers are showing up on the PC’s battle logs, so users are jumping in and out of them unknowing they could be putting their account in danger of a ban. Fingers crossed this is just another upset EA staff member with a lot of bark but no bite.

First impressions of Battlefield 3

The 1.1 gig download had to be the longest wait of my life, it was like running down on Christmas day but being told you could not open your presents until you lit a candle and then had to wait until it burnt down, but once it had downloaded I was straight in to the Battlefield that I love, no waiting times, no lobbies just straight in to the action.

I started off on the attacking team and straight away I just loved the new clean crisp graphics and even better audio. I ran down the hill trying out the newly added prone stance and as I pressed the button to look down my iron sight I let off a little squeal as I noticed my player pulled down a bipod and rested it on the grass. A quick throw of a grenade let off an enjoyable and sharp crack with the blast pushing the tree leaves back. I then quickly noticed a flash in the distance, not from a fired weapon but what looked to be a lens flare from a sniper rifle scop… and then it was too late. I had been hit.

I could go on all day about the hundred of little addiction that have been added to the game that make it more lifelike and just fun to play, but I won’t, instead I ask you .. did you download the beta last night? If so what did you think?
