Have you exhausted all of the current chambers in Portal 2? Thrown cubes more than anyone thought possible? Completed all of the additional free DLC that Valve were nice enough to give? I know I have, and that's why I somewhat incredibly excited for this news - Valve have recently confirmed that their map editor for Portal 2 will be released for Mac and PC on the 8th of May, through Steam.
It sounds like it will work in a manner reminiscent of Little Big Planet's map sharing aspect, allowing users to download, comment on and rate other test subject's creations. It will work how you expect - make a room, make an entrance and an exit, and make it damned hard for the subject to get to there. You will be able to tag surfaces as being receptive to portals or not, place outlets for speed and bounce gel, place some overly friendly turrets, use light bridges and of course buttons and weighted cubes.
You'll be able to quickly jump into your puzzles to subject yourself to your own horrendous creations to check that they are actually completable and tweak those minor aspects such as making sure you land where expected after flying 400m through the air.
This author speculates that the maps will be available for PS3 users, given the game has the capability to play cross system between PS3 and PC as well but likely not for the 360 due to Microsoft's attitude to anything cross-platform. Being a PS3 user, I got a free copy of Portal 2 through Steam which I will be sure to claim soon to put my incredibly poor level design abilities to the test. I'll probably just make the equivalent of an office-toy that fires cubes in pretty patterns.... what will you make?
